The Waxahachie Indians’ momentum from a big season-opening win was stymied on Friday by a strong Mesquite Poteet Pirate defense in a 48-7 loss.

After the Indians received the opening kickoff and a delay of game penalty, junior quarterback DJ Hollywood was picked off by Poteet linebacker Jeremiah Record. The early interception was a sign of things to come, as the Pirates would strike two plays later on a 12-yard run by Cam Lampkin. Poteet would have 390 yards of total offense while holding the Tribe to 222 all-purpose yards.

Waxahachie would be shut out until JJ Overton took a handoff into the end zone from 5 yards out with 9:47 left in the fourth. Unfortunately for the Tribe, it came with the game already out of reach.

Every drive seemed to go the way of the home team, especially as the game took its toll on an exhausted Indian defense. However, head coach Todd Alexander told his team after the game that they now have a chance to bounce back.

“This game does not define our team, and does not define our season,” Alexander told the Waxahachie Daily Light. “We are going to come back tomorrow and fight another day.”

The Indians (1-1) will play their home opener on Friday against Flower Mound Marcus (1-1). Both teams have faced each other only once all-time, with the Marauders triumphing by a score of 51-21 in 2011. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM.
