Indians move into playoffs with win over Mansfield

The Waxahachie Indians secured a playoff spot Friday night with a 21-7 victory over the Mansfield Tigers. The Indian’s defense was masterful in holding off the Tiger attack. Corner Preston Hodge, Edge rusher Jhmarques Head, and Safety Quincy Johnson led the defense in holding Mansfield to just 158 yards and one TD. This win makes it two in a row for the Tribe and moves them into the playoffs for the first time since moving to Division 6A, Region 2, District 11.

The Indians relied on their rushing duo of breakout RB Shawn Cherry and QB convert Brandon Hawkins. Hawkins rushed for 170 yards and two TD’s, while Cherry rushed for 73 yards and a score. Hawkins, the Indian’s most dynamic playmaker, was converted to a QB the week before. Hawkins primarily runs QB keepers; in fact, Hawkins only attempted 6 passes against Mansfield and completed 3 for 7 yards. When asked about what it felt like to make it to the playoffs, Hawkins said, “Man, it feels really great.”

The Indians have now exceeded their win total from last season, sitting at 3-4. The Indians face the Waco Midway Panthers at Home for Senior night.
