In the heart of Waxahachie High School, the sponsor of the Interact club WHS Counselor Chrisanna Melick’s shared words that are a guiding light for the club’s many activities.
“We serve the community, we serve our school, whatever ways that we can,” Melick said.
Interact club is a student-led organization dedicated to community service and making a positive impact. This high school organization is connected to the adult organization called Rotary International.
One of the club’s most cherished traditions is the Angel Tree project.
“Christmas is such a special season and having the angel tree lets us make others who can’t afford presents or necessities experience the festivities,” co-president and senior Avery McBride said.
Each year in the winter, club members decorate a large tree, hanging tags with the wishes of local children in need. Community members select tags to ensure these children have their wish come true, guaranteeing that every child has a memorable holiday.
Co-President and senior Keelan Glass shared her enthusiasm for one of her favorite events organized by Interact Club – the Mums for Emily event. For this special project, students create garters and mums for the life skills class before Homecoming, ensuring that every student can participate in the beloved Hachie tradition.
“I love the ability to help others so that they can enjoy the traditions at Hachie,” Glass said. This event not only brings joy to the students but also fosters inclusiveness within the community. By making these mums and garters, Interact club creates lasting memories for everyone involved. Members discussed how these community projects are heartwarming examples of how the Interact Club makes a positive impact on Waxahachie High School.
Glass and McBride were both drawn to Interact Club their freshman year.
“Prior to high school, I had always gone on international mission trips to places like Guatemala, Haiti and Honduras, so there was no doubt in waiting to help my community grow and build leadership skills,” Glass said.
McBride joined for similar reasons.
“I joined with my friends since I’ve always loved helping people and I thought this club was a good way to start the journey.”
As the school year continues, more projects will be accomplished, making a profound impact on Waxahachie High School and the surrounding community.
“For the community, and the school, we are taking care of things that need to be done,” Melick said.
Melick and Interact members emphasized that serving is what they do, with heart, dedication and a genuine desire to make a difference in the Waxahachie community.
