This year, Waxahachie High School introduced a new elective that may transform the way students think about dance: Interpretive Movement.
The elective is taught by WHS Cherokee Charmers Director Mrs. Erica Pointer-Wilcox. Pointer-Wilcox said Interpretive Movement goes beyond traditional dance routines, focusing on self-expression and storytelling through movement. It’s a form of dance where the dancer uses their body to convey thought and emotion.
“Dance is an expression of movement that can be communicated to the audience by storytelling,” Pointer-Wilcox said.
Mrs. Wilcox says those who participate are “dancers who are not afraid to express through movement and are confident to express emotions.” This program offers dancers an opportunity to experiment and let their movement convey a story.
“The most rewarding part is seeing confidence in dancers evolve,” Wilcox-Pointer said. The main takeaway of Interpretive Movement is for the audience to walk away with understanding and appreciation for the story being told. It’s about the emotional journey and the message on display. Pointer-Wilcox said she is inspired by dancers Alvin Ailey and Lester Horton.
Technique is key in all forms of dance, but Mrs. Pointer-Wilcox prioritizes finding the balance between creativity and technique.
“When technique and creativity are combined, it becomes great to see,” Pointer-Wilcox said.
As dancers may choose to participate on this journey, the hope is that Interpretive Movement will not only enrich their artistic ability but also encourage them to express their thoughts and emotions through dance. This new addition to the Fine Arts department can be a transformative experience for all involved, cultivating not just skilled dancers, but expressive artists.
