The Indian Football team has been playing hard in a tough district with a loss in Duncanville and a loss at home to DeSoto but they will continue this Friday against Mesquite Horn.
Players, coming off of two losses, say these defeats will not stop them from coming to fight for their spot in the playoffs. Senior wide receiver Tristian Gardner spoke to this.
“I’m not worried about district after DeSoto … because they are a high school football team just like we are,” Gardner said. “We are in the same district for a reason, we have every right to be here, we just have to show up and take the field with confidence. As long as we compete to the best of our abilities a win is secured.”
Quarterback and sophomore Jerry Meyer III said he feels the same way and knows that it’s going to take the team to come together to get the job done for the rest of the season.
“Don’t let the moment get too big or the logo be a factor in the game,” Meyer said. “DeSoto was just another football team and the rest after that are just the same. All it takes is for our team to go out and compete with confidence to come home with the win.
“There is no pressure to playing Duncanville and DeSoto — football is football,” Meyer said in previous interview with Hachie Media.
Sophomore defensive end Carmelo Clawson feels the same way.
“Jerry is 100 percent correct right, at the end of the day football is football, if you don’t have the confidence to go onto the filed and play, no matter how much work you put in, it will never show on the field” Clawson said.
This year’s team motto is O.B.S, Others Before Self, and the team has constantly been working to demonstrate that to separate themselves from the other teams in the district.
“Going forward we need to build as a team,” Gardner said. “As of right now the team is separate in terms of offense and defense but if all continue to lift each other up and continue to demonstrate O.B.S then we’ll improve significantly.”
Clawson said work ethic plays a role in performance and distinction of Waxahachie’s team.
“In our district I believe we work the hardest,” Clawson said. “They don’t have practices like we do. All summer we were all up here on our own time getting in workouts and reps so we could prepare for the season.”
The Indian football team will continue district play this Friday in Mesquite against Mesquite Horn.
