The theater program comes full circle as it prepares to take the stage with its winter production of “The Addams Family” this week.
Recreating a fan-favorite musical, this fun and quirky production features an ensemble of characters, starring senior Audrey Winn who plays Wednesday Addams. Winn said this moment ties it all together, as it isn’t her first time performing as Wednesday.
“It all started in 2015 when I saw Kaiden Maines, now one of our directors, perform in WHS’s production of The Addams Family,” Winn said. “It really stuck with me and I was in love with it ever since, and then in 8th grade I also had the opportunity to play as Wednesday, so I was excited to do it this time around as the same character.”
The theater program is also working with the school’s band program, as it features a select orchestra that performs throughout the entire musical. As the rehearsals go by, senior orchestra member Ashley Diaz has enjoyed combining programs for this project.
“Combining two different groups of passionate kids full of unique talent creates an environment full of thrill and excitement,” Diaz said.
The musical will showcase many talents, from performing music to complex choreography and of course, acting.
As the Drama Department enters show week, Director Reynolds reflects on the program’s past.
“We did this musical 10 years ago when the rights were brand new, and it was very successful,” Reynolds said. “Only it was our spring musical, so we didn’t submit it for Broadway Dallas (DSM) High School Musical Theatre Awards. Ten years later here we are doing it again, but this time it’s for competition.”
“The audience loves it,” Reynolds continued. “It’s what we call a crowd pleaser.”
You can support the theater and orchestra students by watching the WHS Addams Family Musical at the WHS Performing Arts Center at 7:00 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday, and 2:00 pm on Sunday.
